In preparation for the invasion, the German air forces (Luftwaffe) were sent to destroy Britain's Royal Air Force in order to prevent them from sinking the ships carrying German soldiers across. By July 1940, Nazi Germany had defeated most of Europe, including France, and were ready to commence with a seaborne invasion of Britain (nicknamed Operation Sea Lion).
